2009 Scholarship Recipients
Adam: Graduate of Vassar College, with honors. He received a Masters Degree with a focus on politics and modern Jewish thought at the University of Chicago. He speaks German, Spanish and French. He will start his PhD program at Hebrew University.
Lina: Has a BA in Middle Eastern Studies. She will be attending Tel Aviv University’s Masters program. She speaks Arabic and Hebrew and plans to attend Law School in the US after attaining her MA degree in Israel, all with the intention of using her skills to be active in the Jewish community.
Elana: Is a graduate of a Modern Orthodox Jewish high school in California. She will be attending Ben-Gurion University and majoring on the Peace and Regional Security track, in which she will study Hebrew and Arabic. She will participate in helping refugees from Sudan and will be working with children suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder while she is in Be’er Sheva.
Geoffrey: Our Honors graduate from the University of Texas is going to Hebrew University to attend the M.A. Program in Society and Politics in Israel. He was active in Hillel and AIPAC and involved in social justice programs. While at UT, he involved himself in numerous volunteer activities including working with people with disabilities, blood drive and the local Hillel.
Jolene: At California State University, she was President of Hillel where she grew the attendees at events from 10 to over 100. She was founder and president of the Jewish Studies Club on campus. Earlier, she was a volunteer Youth Director for United Synagogue Youth and she continues her volunteering while acquiring her BA in Jewish Studies.
Yonit: She obtained her degree from Harvard, majoring in Biochemical Sciences with a minor in Philosophy. She will pursue her Masters at Hebrew University with the intent to continue on to medicine or a PhD in Biology. Her Philosophy background and her deep religious feelings lead her to feel a moral obligation towards social action where she sees as Jewish values.
Maura: After receiving a BA, with honors, with majors in both Psychology and Jewish, Islamic and Near eastern Studies from Washington University in St. Louis, Maura is off to Ben-Gurion University to pursue her Masters. Maura has completed three years at Rabbinical school and has served as Student Rabbi in Rapid City, SD; Beckley, WV; Fort Walton Beach, FL and in the Crimea, Ukraine.
Aviva: After graduation from Rutgers with Dean’s list honors, Aviva is off the Hebrew University to get her M.A. in Community Leadership and Philanthropy. She plans to work in the non-profit sector when she returns to the US. Her past activities and her future studies will prepare her for her stated aspiration to work in the specific areas of young girls’ adolescent development, including their emotional, social and intellectual concerns.
Debra: She has completed her sophomore year at Brandeis University where she is a double major in Sociology and Jewish Education. She is on her way to a Hebrew University to continue her education with the stated goal of a doctorate and work in the Jewish community. She intends to continue her volunteer work in Israel as she has done so often here in the US.
Melody: As a sophomore, Melody has chosen to go to the International Center (IDC) in Herziliya to pursue her plans to receive an MBA in Business Management, Finance and Accounting. Her two years at Brooklyn College were illuminated by her impressive GPA of 3.825 and her volunteering in Israeli interest activities.
